Press Release

As a part of the 12th day of the ongoing ‘Online Learning – Children’s Summer Festival, an online learning session on ‘Theatre’ was conducted by theatre artiste, Ms. Kajal Suri. The session focused on voice modulation and diction in theatre. It threw light on the various vocal qualities an actor needs to adopt when performing on stage.

The session began with a brief introduction on the significant role of voice modulation and speech in theatre. The artiste demonstrated some voice exercises commonly used by theatre artistes to train and warm up their voice. These included exercises like ‘Saat Sur’, recording your voice and bringing modulation to it as well as modulating your voice keeping in mind to manage rhythm, pitch and volume. This was followed by an in-depth discussion on the importance of pause, projection, timbre and expression during speech.

For a theatre performance to touch the soul of the audience, voice is the most important element. Until you live the character your voice will not be perfect, shared the artiste. The session proceeded to throw light on the difference between theatre as well as conversation and dialogue.

The difference between voice management on stage and the radio was also discussed briefly. The artiste explained that on the radio the artiste has to paint a picture for their audience. For this, the voice needs to be soft because the microphones are sensitive. If one speak too loudly the voice will break and breathing sounds will come on the microphone. On stage during a theatre performance, the artiste must deliver with complete modulation in one go. Elements like voice diction, modulation, costumes and how you live your character all go into delivering the perfect stage performance.
