Press release (Day 3)

Jaipur Architecture Festival at India Stonemart

Jaipur, 4 February: An alumnus of IIT Roorkee, Architect Amit Singh today shared his insight on the “Future of Architecture Design and Education”.  He was speaking at the Jaipur Architecture Festival being held as a part of the 9th India Stone Mart. Highlighting the importance of virtual reality (VR), he said that virtual reality creates a digital environment that replaces user’s real world reality. Virtual reality, he further said, is a great medium to communicate human experience.

Explaining about the various tools of using virtual reality in the field of architecture, Singh said that fully immersive virtual reality walkthroughs using ‘Oculus Rift Headset’ and ‘Google Cardboard’ are quite useful. Similarly, ‘Realistic Renderings’ which involves viewing a set of realistic, high resolution image renderings from every angle and viewpoint is also a popular method to use virtual reality.

Professionally choreographed video walkthroughs of 3D models as well as futuristic virtual reality experiences allows both the architects as well as their clients to virtually walk into the new structure prior to its construction.

Talking about the importance of virtual reality for students of architecture, Singh stated that what he simulate is retained in our memory for a much longer duration of time as compared to what we hear or see. Virtual Reality is thus an immensely useful teaching aid that can aid in experiential as well as immersive learning.  In addition, virtual reality also contributes towards better management and presents complex data in an accessible way.

The advantages of Virtual Reality are manifold. Not only is it an unconventional method of teaching but is also inexpensive and time saving. It allows one to feel the space and not just look at it, thereby adding an innovative and unique dimension and making the building more realistic for students.

It is to be recalled that the event is organised by Centre for Development of Stones (CDOS) with Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) as co-organiser and is supported by the Government of Rajasthan and other reputed institutions. Rajasthan State Industrial Development & Investment Corporation Ltd. (RIICO) is the Principal Sponsor of the event.
