Over 17 participants from the Ministry of Public Health, Afghanistan attended a training programme on ‘Leadership and Strategic Management for Senior Management Executives in TB Control for Afghanistan’. The 5-day programme concluded at IIHMR University, Jaipur on 5 December. Effective training methods like lecture, discussion, presentation, management games, group work and field visits were employed during the course.

The training programme focused on improving the participants’ leadership and managerial competencies to achieve optimal health systems performance said Pro-President, IIHMR-U, Dr. P.R. Sodani. It is of utmost significance to analyse the current situation of performance in an organisation to begin the process of strategic decision making. This will include conducting situational analysis of the internal and external environment.

He further added that corporations need to be less bureaucratic and more flexible for strategic management. Companies need to become ‘learning organizations’ to avoid stagnation. They must involve the community in strategic decisions being made for the community so as to make the plan acceptable to majority from the get-go. The senior-level executives and programme managers in healthcare sector require enhanced leadership and managerial skills to improve the performance of the healthcare organizations.
