A 5 day Light Design workshop by the veteran light designer, Shymon PM began at Jawahar Kala Kendra (JKK). The workshop began with the resource person giving the participants an insight into the history of stage lighting. He showed the participants video clips of three different kinds of performances — Contemporary Dance, Kathak and a play to show the usage of light in different performances and settings.  It is worth noting that this kind of a workshop is being held for the first time in JKK.

Over the course of 5 days, the participants will also be taught how to handle the instrument, how to design for a performance according to the venue, costume etc.

Shymon PM listed 5 essential things to keep in mind while designing light for theatre — Mood, Visibility, Atmosphere, Dimension and Rhythm. On the concluding day the participants will also be asked to design for a demo scene of theatre.

The workshop is being attended by participants  from different backgrounds like theatre, film making and dance.

It is to be noted Shymon has been a dedicated light designer. He has been working for the past 14 years in India and other countries in the light design.

He completed his degree in theatre from the University of Calicut (School of Drama, Thrissur, Kerala) in 2002. He further postgraduated from University of Hyderabad in 2006 with a gold medal. He is guest faculty in University of Calicut and University of Pondicherry and visiting faculty in more than 7 universities. He is currently settled in Kerala as a freelancing lighting designer.
