As a part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, a ‘Mand Gayan’ performance was organized in Rangayan at Jawahar Kala Kendra (JKK). The performance was presented by well-known folk artistes, Shri Savarmal Kathak from Shri Dungargarh in Bikaner and Banarasi Lal from Jodhpur. During the programme, they presented songs like – Kesariya Balam, Pankhiyo, Mhari Sajni, Nain Katari Mat Maro, Aavaniya Karo Ni, Mhara Sajniya, Chandrawal Bail, etc.
Mand or Maand is the famous style of singing of Rajasthan. In the 10th-11th century, the Jaisalmer region was called the Mand region. Therefore, the singing style developed here is called ‘Mand Gayan’. It is well recognized in classical circles and this style is very important in folk songs of Rajasthan. It is very near to the Thumri or the Ghazal. It is the exclusive contribution of Rajasthani folklore to the classical music of India. It is Rajasthan’s most sophisticated style of folk music and is the most exclusive contribution to the classical music of India.
