Press Release

On the 9th day of the ongoing ‘Online Learning – Children’s Summer Festival’, viewers witnessed a visual arts online learning session on ‘Painting on Natural Fiber’. It was conducted by artist, Surbhi Soni. The session focused on creating floral designs on natural fiber like t-shirts, bags, dupattas and other dress materials. Viewers also learned the technique of freehand painting and practicing on paper using watercolours before transferring their work to the fabric.

The session began with sketching designs on paper using a light hand. The sketches were then stroked over with paint to create colourful patterns on paper. Following this the artist prepared the fabric by stretching it out with the help of an embroidery ring. She applied paint to the fabric using various brushstrokes to create desired designs. One must ensure that the used fabric has no starch. If it does, all starch must be removed by soaking the fabric in water overnight. Once the fabric is painted it must be left to dry for 24 hours before washing, she informed.

Furthermore, the artist also explained the leaf pattern, washed effect and tie-dye technique of painting. She said that lighter shades can be used to create details and highlight any design. One can use pastels shades on lighter fabric and metallic on dark fabric for detailing once the base dries. The artist also threw light on the different types of paints which can be used for painting on natural fiber namely dye-colours and fabric paint. The type of brush to be used must be decided depending on the type and size of the desired design.
