The 10th Manipal Ranka International Moot Court Competition -2024 was successfully conducted recently. The event was graced by many domain experts and student participants across India. The enthusiastic participants competed with eloquent arguments, intensive research and creative advocacy on a contemporary theme, i.e. International Commercial Arbitration. The event began with a vibrant Inaugural Ceremony. A panel of distinguished guests comprising of Chief Guest, Hon’ble Justice S. Ravindra Bhat, Former Judge, Supreme Court of India; Guest of Honour, Hon’ble Justice Alok Sharma, Former Judge, Rajasthan High Court and Guest of Honour, Dr. Manoj Kumar Sinha, Vice Chancellor, Dharmashastra National Law University, Jabalpur graced the occasion and gave meaningful insights.  

The Valedictory ceremony was conducted with the graceful presence and address by esteemed Chief Guest, Hon’ble Justice M N Bhandari, Chairman, Appellate Tribunal SAFEM Act, 1976, and Former Chief Justice, Madras High Court. The ceremony was further enriched with presence and address by the Guest of Honour, Justice Ashok Kumar Gaur, Former Judge, Rajasthan High Court; Special Guest, Ranjit Singh Kumat, retired IAS officer and Guest of Honour, Dr. Amar Pal Singh, Vice Chancellor, Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University, Lucknow.

The eminent speakers emphasized embracing this opportunity to learn, grow, and excel as future legal practitioners and demonstrate not only knowledge and skill but also unwavering dedication to the ideals of justice, fairness, and truth. The teams of National Law Institute University, Bhopal (NLIU, Bhopal) and University Five Year Law College, University of Rajasthan, Jaipur powerfully argued in the final round. In this competition, the team comprising NLIU Bhopal secured first position as the winner. Nikhil Bhargava and Yashotma Singh from NLIU Bhopal also won Best Speaker and Best Researchers awards.

The event was honored by the esteemed presence of members from the Ranka Public Charitable Trust, including Smt. Urmila M. Ranka (Chairperson), Mr. Justice J.K. Ranka (Vice-Chairman), and Mr. Siddharth Ranka (Secretary). Jaipur’s Young Golfer, Ojaswini Saraswat, representing Rajasthan, has triumphed at her fourth national tournament held at Oxford Golf Resorts, Pune. With rounds of 73, 69, and 75, she secured the national title by two strokes, marking her third victory this year.

Despite trailing by two strokes on day one, Ojaswini showcased exceptional skill and determination to take the lead on day two. On the final day, she clinched the title even after facing a controversial two-stroke penalty.

Ojaswini expressed gratitude to her coach, Mr. Laurence Brotheridge, and her family for their unwavering support. Last month, she finished second in her third national event after recovering from dengue. It is worth mentioning that out of the four national tournaments played this year, she has won three titles. It is noteworthy that she trains hard and practices regularly at the Rambagh Golf Club in Jaipur to hone her skills.

On the occasion of the Birth Anniversary of Jaipur’s founder, Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, a discussion and poetry recitation was organised at Sarvatobhadra Chowk of City Palace. In the programme, eminent scholars highlighted the work and personality of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II.  On the occasion, the Rajasthani poets enthralled the audience with mesmerising poetry recitation in Dhundhari language. The programme commenced with a floral tribute and the ceremonial lighting of the lamp before a portrait of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II. The event was organised under the auspices of the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum, on the intiative of its Chairman, His Highness Maharaja Sawai Padmanabh Singh.

The Executive Trustee of MSMS II Museum, Rama Datt, in her welcome address said that it is a matter of pride for all of us that the city of Jaipur, founded by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, has been recognised as a World Heritage City by UNESCO. Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II was an extraordinary personality who had remarkable knowledge of astronomy, mathematics, astrology and architecture. He also built Jantar Mantar observatories at many places in India including, Jaipur. Retired Principal of Sanskrit College, Subhash Chandra Sharma highlighted the history of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II. He talked about how Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II took over the reins of the State at the young age of 11 years and he received the title of ‘Sawai’ from Aurangzeb. He also emphasised that Sawai Jai Singh II was the first ruler who performed ‘105 Kundiya Yagya’.

Senior journalist Jitendra Singh Shekhawat remarked that after Prithviraj Chauhan, Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II was the first ruler to unite Hindu leaders in support of Hinduism. He also shared that a new book on the preservation of Sanskrit literature and the Vedic scholars of Jaipur will be released soon. Art and Culture OSD at City Palace and a renowned Vedic painter, Ramu Ramdev through his paintings threw light on Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II’s biography, Jantar-Mantar and ‘Ashvamedha Yagna’. He shared that Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh was a passionate patron of the arts, inviting artists from across India to settle in Jaipur, establishing streets dedicated to their crafts, and ensuring their livelihood. The programme was conducted by Shobha Chander.

Well known Rajasthani poets  participated in the poetry recital organised with the aim of promoting the Dhundhari language. These included Gopinath Gopesh, Kalyan Singh Shekhawat, Govind Shankar, Bhagwan Sahay Pareek, Prahlad Chanchal, Kishore Pareek, Sushila Sharma, Abhilasha Pareek, Kamna Rajawat, Ritesh Sharma, Suman Prakash, Vinay Kumar and other eminent poets. Through their poems, the poets introduced the audience to Jaipur’s tradition, culture and history.

In his address, litterateur Govind Shankar Sharma said that the most reliable book written during the time of Sawai Jai Singh II, ‘Vachan Praman’, describes his tenure in detail. More than 3,000 couplets have been written in this book. He also threw light on the public protection system of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II.

The event closed with the Adminstrator, City Palace, Pramod Yadav honouring guests with a ceremonial scarf, while Chief Curator Ram Kishan extended his heartfelt gratitude to all in attendance.

While Rajasthan has a Heritage Tourism Policy, it is crucial for the Union Government to establish a similar policy to create a comprehensive framework for heritage preservation and promotion across the country. Areas with rich heritage, such as Shekhawati and Chettinad, need dedicated preservation efforts. The Government of India should allocate a corpus fund to support these initiatives across various states. These expectations will be communicated to the Government at the Indian Heritage Hotels Association’s (IHHA) 11th Annual Convention being held this year on 19 and 20 September at Indeco Hotel Swamimalai, Kumbakonam in Thanjavur of Tamil Nadu. This was stated by General Secretary, IHHA, Captain Gaj Singh today at a Press Conference held at Alsisar Haveli.

The General Secretary further said that there is also a pressing need for world-class facilities and infrastructure around existing tourist sites to enhance the overall visitor experience and boost tourism.  The redevelopment of Jaipur’s old city, Amber, and the Chambal riverfront in Kota should serve as exemplary models for other tourist sites, showcasing what can be achieved with focused efforts. Moreover, enhancing road connectivity from highways to tourist centers is essential for facilitating easier access for travellers.

Convention Chairman of IHHA, Mr Rajendra Singh Pachar underlined the programme for the two-day convention. He said this year’s theme of the AGM and Convention is ‘Revitalizing Indian Heritage’. This is the first time that the IHHA AGM and Convention is going to be held in a state other than Rajasthan. About 150 heritage hoteliers from all over India are expected to attend the event. It is worth mentioning that there are a total of 206 heritage hotels pan India and about 140 heritage hotels in Rajasthan.

He informed that on 19 September the IHHA Convention will be inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Minister of Tourism, Government of Tamil Nadu, Thiru K Ramachandran and Special Guest, Minister of Tourism, Government of Puducherry, K Lakshminarayanan by lighting the lamp. Additional Secretary, IAS, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, Dr Suman Billa and Director General, IAS, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, Mugdha Sinha will also be present in the programme. The second day of the convention (20 September) will commence with a one-to-one meeting of South India Tour Operators with heritage hotel owners. This will be followed by the Executive Committee Meeting and the 23rd Annual General Meeting.

Also present on the occasion was Executive Committee member of IHHA, Mr. Deepraj Singh.

About IHHA and Heritage Tourism Movement

Heritage hotels in the country have made a distinct identity in the world of tourism. For the purpose of preservation and revival of these heritage hotels and properties, the Indian Heritage Hotels Association (IHHA) came into existence in the year 1990 with only 14 members and by September 2018 this number increased to 193. More than 200 members have joined the association, committing to preserving the rich heritage of India. The recognition of heritage classification by the Department of Tourism & Culture, Government of India on January 1, 1990, laid the groundwork for our association, which was formally registered in 2001. In January 1991, the Government of India recognised heritage hotels as a distinct category, classifying them into three tiers: ‘Heritage’, ‘Heritage Classic’ and ‘Heritage Grand’.

IHHA is dedicatedly working for the conservation and revival of forts, palaces, old buildings, palaces and traditional ‘havelis’. The association is not only setting standards in heritage hospitality but also laying down heritage classification guidelines and promoting heritage tourism in the inbound tourism market.

It is worth noting that IHHA’s first Annual Convention was held on 21 and 22 September, 2012 at Ranthambore, with an objective to revive India’s rich, cultural, historical and architectural heritage.

The Department of Psychology at Manipal University Jaipur conducted a two day event “Revive “on occasion of World Suicide Prevention Day which is observed on 10th September every year .The objective of this event was to spread awareness on the topic of suicide and mitigate the stigma associated by changing the narrative. The program aimed to sensitize the audience and promote well-being and enhance mental health. The theme this year was “start the conversation “. The students participated in various activities like slogan and poster (physical and digital) making competition, positive affirmations, hand painting and signature campaign etc. The program was attended by all the students and staff of Manipal University Jaipur. An interactive session by Dr. Jaishree Jain Senior Clinical Psychologist was held on 11th September 2024 for students of Manipal University Jaipur where she discussed about causes, intervention and management related to suicide prevention.

To foster a deeper connection with nature, 25 students and 5 staff members from Umang recently participated in an immersive bird-watching experience in collaboration with Prakriti NGO in Kanota. The group was hosted by Kanota Camp Resort.

During the trip, participants engaged in nature walks, observed birds from various bird stations and took part in numerous nature-related activities. The trip significantly enhanced the students’ appreciation for the environment, leaving them enthusiastic and inspired to explore more of nature’s wonders. This was informed by the Director of Umang, Deepak Kalra.

Over the past years, Umang has held several talks, slide shows, and art activities in collaboration with Prakriti NGO for the students and received an overwhelming response. Two years ago, Umang undertook a campaign along with Prakriti NGO to expose and sensitise the students of Umang to the beauty around them with a focus on bird-watching. This gave way to the recently organised bird-watching experience, and the students are now excited about more nature adventures in the future.

It is to be noted that Prakriti NGO, established in 2021 by a group of retired IAS officers and their families, focuses on reconnecting children with nature. It was started by Malovika and Parvinder Pawar (1982 IAS batch), Umesh Kumar (1983 IAS batch), Artist Nilima, Retired IAS officer Vikram Chauhan, Educationist Rama, Retired Senior Executive in the private sector, Sanjeev Mathur and Former Director of the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) Jaipur, Kanchan Mathur.
